1940 1942 1942 A/C Compressor Question

Yes, i have seen the blue 1940 that comes up on an internet search.

What I want to know is if/how the 1941/2 compressor differs from 1940, or to confirm, is the one on the blue car correct 1940?

The compressor in the blue car looks to be the same as the compressor in the McArthur Clipper but the head looks to be positioned 180 degrees different 40 vs the later cars. It appears they needed the upper tubing to come out on a different side. If anyone has a copy of the special prewar AC parts list that they could check it might answer the compressor differences question.

I am still curious why they felt the need to change the compressor from the right side of engine to the left side on Clippers when the engine and one would think the compressors were the same as used on conventional bodies. It must have resulted in a significant expense for new brackets and maybe some relocation of components on the left side of engine to make room for the compressor.

Has anyone checked with The Packard Proving Grounds or The Studebaker National Museum to see if the blue prints exist for these items?

Maybe the blue prints can answer some of the questions?

The A/C compressor assy.used with the std. body has a different part# for each yr. 1940 #356013, 1941 #362458, 1942 #360440,no indication what the difference is. The Clipper models use two different compressors 1941 #373175 & 1942 #378987

Could be different based on the compressor mount needed for each of the motors.

Basis of question was effort to identify a mystery compressor. From info gathered, it appears the compressor offered was of similar vintage/design as the Packard compressor, but the bottom mount, and other slight differences suggest it just ain't Packard.

That said, if anyone has a 40-42 Packard Air Conditioning Compressor they wish to sell...cash waiting.

Would you post a photo? Any chance the mount could be for a Clipper or the opposite side of engine?

I believe I read that Cadillac also switched to the Bishop and Babcock AC system. If not Packard, wonder if the compressor could be theirs.

Cadillac and Chrysler offered it a year after Packard, but I believe the majority of installations were Packard.

Hi

This air conditioned '41 120 sedan was offered at a midwest auction a few years ago. Though the photos weren't great, I saved them for reference.

If Bishop and Babcock product information or manuals can be found, it might include whether these compressors were also used in non-automotive applications.
