G'day Weldingwilly13,
to PackardInfo. Parts you're after should be available from the major parts suppliers Kanters and Max Merritt and probably others. Part numbers are detailed in the 1935-1941 Packard Parts List which is availabe for free down load from the Packard Literature and Manuals section on this Website. To help you on your way here's a link to that Manual. And, I invite you to include your '40 120 Packard in the Packard Owner's Registry.

Packard part # 324961 is the outer seal
The inner seal for 1940 is 323135, superseded by 384215 which was used for cars with the 356 engine from 1941 to 1950 then again in 1953 to 1955 for most models

Hello
I had a 1941 120 Club Coupe for some time. I did not change this seal myself, but they have been known to give trouble. The previous owner of my car replaced this seal twice. Not without dramas! Apparently, they are a press fit. The first attempt failed because the seating surface on the original part is quite flimsy and was damaged when it was being installed. Result. It still leaked quite badly. Another seal was then fitted (with more care?). Unfortunately, I don't have the details now but seem to recall that it was not the original part. Perhaps somebody on this forum will know what it was. After fitting, it still leaked a little but much less than before. It was on there when I got the car and never got any worse with substantial mileage. Few drops of oil on the ground after sitting for a while, which I decided to live with. Brian

Replacing the seal often times does not fully cure the leak. This is due to a groove that has been worn in the shaft by the seal lip. Thin precision made sleeves can be used to restore the shaft surface. They are available at bearing and seal stores, probably not at most auto parts places. I will look for the ones I have used and post that info here.
Here we go! Two photos showing the sleeves and a sleeve installed on a brake drum shaft. The sleeves were a bit long and needed a trimming to get correct length. The sleeves come with an installation tool. This was when I was working on the 47 Custom. Attach file: (59.38 KB) (33.15 KB)
