Good Evening...I suggest that you trace the linkage from your gas pedal to the carburetor and see if it has become disconnected...or a return spring has come loose. This does not sound to me like a lube issue. Most likely not a serious issue...just one that needs to be traced and reconnected...Ernie in Arizona

You could have crud in the carb bore that is sticking the throttle plate open. But I would check for bent or sticking ljnkage first.
My clipper did this to me before inhad replaced the floor pans. The pedal mount had rusted away and caused the pedal to move sideways. Which causes the linkage to bind on the firewall.

Thank you for the suggestions. My initial check of the linkages shows no apparent issues but I will look more carefully to see if i missed anything, including the binding issue that was noted. Thanks again.

Check the throttle return spring. It might have become streeeeeeched with use and age and needs replacing. Or use a stronger spring.

My guess - a sticking fast idle cam/linkage on the carburetor.
