Carter WDO pump needle valve - which way?

Hi Guys, I have a Carter WDO, 512S carb on my 1936 120B Conv coupe. Just giving it a clean out after 2300 mile drive around NZ South Island with 20 other Packards. A problem!! The needle valve (looks like a small version of the fuel input needle valve)fell out when I turned the carb upside down after removing the airhorn, and now I don't know which way it goes in. The screw above it seems to have a taper in the bottom so I wonder if the valve goes with needle point up toward bottom of screw. Any help welcomed ASAP as I want to put it back together. As a side note, I have had the car for 9 years and just finished a body off restoration just before the trip. It was mainly body, paint, upholstery, wiring and chrome as I have kept her mechanically excellent over recent years.

It is called a pump check needle and it installs point down. The other needle is part of the needle and seat assembly, which controls gas flow into fuel bowl. Good luck.

Thanks Dallas. Is there meant to be spring with this check valve? Does anyone have a full exploded diagram of this carb? None of the carb manuals for WDO that I have seen actually show this pump check valve, they just mention it as part of disassembly/assembly routine. Other versions of WDO seem to use a check ball.

G'day Mal,
A more public to PackardInfo, than that of my PM, and a chance for me to make a request. Could you please include your '36 120B in the Packard Owner's Registry, together with a pic, any known history and how you acquired it?

Hmm? I see that we now have three Mals on site. Is that a gang? Good thing they are all separated by large bodies of water.
And a good day and WELCOME to the Mal in NZ.

No spring. Needle is installed into cavity point down, then special screw is installed along with discharge nozzles. There is a very good picture in the 1942 Service Manual. Good luck
