If the bolts are behind the flywheel like a Chevy was. You'll need to remove the clutch and flywheel to access them.
Make sure to mark the relationship between the pressure plate and flywheel before removal.

On a '40, just remove the hex screws and drop the housing.

G'day ironracer,
to PackardInfo. I invite you to include your 23rd Series Packard in the Packard Owner's Registry either before or after you get the bellhousing off!

Don't know if this will help, but I have a video on removing the Flywheel Cover.

Thanks for the info, also video was helpful.
Ozstatman, unfortunately I don't have the actual car, it's just the engine I'm rebuilding for a rod project..

You have to remove the clutch and flywheel first. This gets you access to the inside of the bellhousing where there are (I think) six bolts holding it to the engine block.
I have one engine in storage with the housing and clutch system still on the engine. I can't figure out how to remove the clutch fork! I did it years ago on my other engine. ...but I can't remember how!!! Good luck! Mark

Usually the clutch fork just pops off the ball stud. They have spring clip sort of arrangement.
