Correct colors for engine parts

Can someone point me to any engine photos that show the correct colors for all the engine parts such as the oil filler neck, the front crank pulley etc... Are all the head bolts supposed to be painted along with the head? I have it all apart and would like to paint black what should be black and gray that should be gray. Thanks

Bob, if you look at the pics of my '54 from my blog, the engine, accessories and engine bay are painted based on what is called out in the PI Engine Judging Guide. So it should serve as a good template for most of the 51-54 cars. Only difference would be the spark plug boots were were not used until 1953.

Thanks Kevin,

Question regarding the color of the motor mounts and the oil pan. I assume the oil pan is black and the motor mounts are either left bare or are painted the engine gray.

Oil pan should be engine color as well as well as the engine mount.

Kev, bought the engine enamel from Bill Hirsch. talked with him and he assured me the color was correct. I don't know. It looks light to me. The only thing I have to compair it to is the 60 year old paint on the water goose neck on the top of the engine. That was the only thing not stripped and repainted green. What paint did you use? I tried to locate the Massey Ferguson paint some people on here said they used. Couldn't locate a Massey Ferguson distrubuter that could help much.

Hi Kev, Thanks for the response. When I ordered the paint from Hirsch I wasn't given a choice between light and dark gray. Bill just assured me his "Packard gray" was correct. What I got must be the lighter shade of gray. Looking at the pictures of your engine it does look like your paint has brown in it. What Hirsch sent me is really lite gray with no trace of brown. I've painted a couple of parts already and have a mixed opinion of the color. Over time it may darken and look better. My car will never be a show car anyway. The color will just have to do. Why does this color thing have to be so difficult?

I would be interested in any comments from the rest of you on here.

Kevin Another question. Did you prime the steel and sheet metal parts or did you just paint them gray? In the past I never bothered to prime anything on the engine. Seems like the engine paint stuck just fine.
