I bought a complete overdrive lockout cable from David Moe with Packard Seattle awhile back for my 1947 Packard Clipper.

The original owner had pulled all of the Electromatic Clutch Parts & the overdrive cable & brackets from the car prior to me acquiring it. My mechanic & I are just getting around to installing the cable, and we're not sure of the operating position of the Lockout Control Lever on the overdrive case itself. The lever arm has been wired to the frame so that it wouldn't move.

Can you give us any feedback as to the starting position of the lever, and how much range of motion should occur when the lockout knob under the dash is pulled ?

This is the 47 Custom bracket. The OD cable is mounted with it's groove in the U bolt and IIRC, the end of lever is just about all the way to front when knob is pulled out.

Been a few years, but as I recall there is a lot more movement on the OD lever than there is on the dash control. So the process is simply to insure that the OD is fully engaged/disengaged with the dash control at the extreme limits of it's travel.

Owen is correct, there is much more travel than necessary at the lever. Set it up so that when the knob is pulled all the way out, the lever is pulled fully forward. When the knob is pushed in, the lever should be back in its region of free play.

Hi , I am new to the forum - I just purchased a 1948 Packard , four door sedan. 2262. It has overdrive and electromatic clutch, but both are inoperable , and may have some parts missing. Can you tell me if I have a R 9 or R 11 overdrive. I think it is a early 48 model. Serial number is 2262 3445. I know I will need help and advise. Thanks

You can tell by looking at the overdrive control relay on the firewall. The R-9 unit is about the size of the voltage regulator, black cover, and 6 terminal leads. The R-11 is much smaller, cadminum-plated cover with intergral fuse, and only 3 wires attached.

I saw a small box with 3 terminals , with only two wires attached. Guess it is R 11 ?

That small box with 2 wires, if attached to accelerator linkage may be the accelerator switch -- part of the Electromatic clutch.
