Tom, memory says that the "PACKARD" lettering on the trunk semi-circle was black. The only red was the circular medallion. Look at the first picture in the 1951 pictures section as it is a pretty good view of the trunk and trim.
If anyone has a better recollection or actual pic that would be great. Randy

Thanks Randy. The picture you mentioned, doesn't show black characters as far as I can see. Maybe somebody has a better picture?

I think black also. Only picts I can find of 51s are all B&W but the lettering appears pretty dark. I have a good pict of a 52 and it's black although I'm not sure that's correct because I've seen red there as well. Interestingly, Packard didn't seem to know either. Granted, they're air brush renderings but in a sales folder, "Packards the one for 51", the creme colored car had black but the red car had red letters.

my memory is better on the 52 because we had one. The "PACKARD" lettering was black in 1952.

I'm sorry I can't add any relevant facts to this discussion, but as a Dutchman and a Packard man your picture has warmed my heart!

Tom,
Looking good - love the background to your picture of the '51.

To add to the discussion, the latest issue of the Cormorant (#129) shows a nicely restored 51 trunk emblem and it was painted red.

Howard, did you mean the lettering was red or the separate emblem? I don't have my Cormorant handy. The emblem should be red, but the green 51 conv shown on this forum appears to have black lettering on the semi-circular piece.

The letters are red. Its a nicely restored 200 business coupe and lettering looks very close to shade of emblem. I suppose until someone comes forward with an unmolested original, it will be a guess because the sales brochure I mentioned shows both.
