So I understand that the best repair technique is not the cut any wires, I agree, Peter Toet My PB 56 Patrician can get it's knickers in a twist if the voltage is low or persons have wired up the relays incorrectly. It almost killed me as i laid over the guard and started the car remotely under the bonnet, in High on choke when I first got it. I fortunately had a dead man's grip on the coil wire to the distributor and it only got halfway across the road before it disconnected. Be very careful of the PB if you are going to work on it. Talk to Mr PB, best regards peter Toet.

When I am not fully-familiar with the condition of a Packard that's equipped with pushbutton shift, I always turn the key to the "run" position and push each button, in succession, to see how things sound with the shift actuator BEFORE I even attempt to crank it over.
Still, there are no guarantees that all else is well inside the tranny, and even the best wheel chock won't stop a runaway car. One might do well to jack up the rear axle and lower it onto a couple of sturdy jack stands so that the drive wheels are off the ground.

Apparently Mr PB just got a job from someone who hacked the thing apart. I am surprised many times by mechanics who understand everything in a car unless it has wires connected to it. In any case, Mr PB gives sound advice and it is appreciated.

DON'T CUT ANY WIRES Tell that to the rats who hacked up mine. I reconnected everything and have absolutely 0 shifter problems in the two years I drove the car on a daily basis.

Actually, much to many people's distaste, it's reconnected with butt connectors!

You can do that--they will actually work for quite a while.
I just can't send anything out my door like that, with my name on it so it's solder and shrink tubing for me, then re-tape the harness. Can ya'll read how exasperated I was last night? Some amber liquid (from Tennessee)on ice helped that situation immensely.

That amber liquid has made for many a relaxing evening.
When I am out at a bar, I mix it with Dr. Pepper. I guess you would call that a Dr. Jack. But we have nick-named it the 'Kevorkian'. ...now back to your regular scheduled thread....

Many a man's problems, and maybe even pushbutton wiring ones, have been solved or at least put into a different light when looked at through the bottom of a glass or bottle. Cheers
