Never saw this before but obviously illegal! Apparently it is a decal kit for converting a standard California plate to a YOM plate. Seems easy enough but not sure how long it would last even if it were legal.

Don, I know you are a verifier and more familiar with DMV than I and while they show it on a California plate I would still think one should be very careful buying or using that item. Last I read California was extremely touchy about anything going on or over license plates and particularly something that would change the look of the plate.

I suspected as much but this is something not covered in the verifier’s handbook. In fact, a vehicle needn’t even have plates on it.

Sound illegal... basically a fake document.

In a way, yes, it would be like a false document. However, the numbers still match the registration so it’s unclear how the DMV would view it but not well, I’m sure.

This, of course, is not something I would do and wasn’t even looking for it when the listing appeared but, of course, it caught my attention. All my cars are in Oregon but still have California registration so it occurred to me that the yellow plates wouldn’t stand out quite so much as Oregon also has plates in use that are that color.

When all else fails read the instructions/rules.
Non-speculative, I figured I'd look it up but CA has 38 sections on special license plates, if someone else wants to wade thru the maze. Or one can ask the vendor on the link a question.

Here we can take an old year plate and get it transferred and put in on/use as current. But only a one plate state, so I put the one that came w/ car on the front, save $75.

That's one thing I was so happy to learn about where I live in Georgia. My "real plate" I can just keep in the car (anywhere- glovebox, floor, trunk) and my original YOM is what I can keep on the car. The old plate is "registered" or associated with the new one though with the DMV.

I also was able to mix things a bit with GA only having back plates. An owner at some point redid an original YOM PA tag which is on the front, and my aged GA one which actually matches the age of the original paint is on the back so I have the best of both worlds, even if it confuses others.

This pretty much covers it. Altering your license plate in California is illegal.
