Does your Sportster have a dip stick in the engine compartment to check the transmission oil level? If so, it is a Gear Start. I'll let others here describe the differences.

The regular Ultra will have PNHLR on the shift quadrant and the gearstart will have those letters plus an additional dot between two of them--I don't remember if it's between N & H or H & L. I think BigKev has pictures of the dipstick and quadrant somewhere in his blog.

A GearStart will have a PN*DLR quadrant instead of a PNHLR quadrant.

Hmm, this discussion feels like d?j? vu all over again.

Not to step on anybody's right to express their knowledge, but because this subject keeps coming up and has been covered several times, but with different twists, I was prompted to pick up with a text that I had started several months ago, for a new FAQ post: Ultramatic Transmission - A Primer.

It's a bit long, but I hope I covered just enough - and correctly.

Per Brian's FAQ on the Ultramatic

Personally, I see no logic to the pushbutton layout, except that P-N-R are grouped together on a common buss bar only so they can be cut-out at speeds above 5-8 MPH, all at once, by a governor oil pressure switch.

And here is Packards official reasoning on the subject.

Howard -

Leave it to you to find that in the brochure, A Woman's Place - LOL! (I only figured that out AFTER you posted the pic - recognized the paper stock.)

Be advised that I have since retooled that paragraph to include the explanation, with citation (and a nod to you).

Just a note to advise that I've tweaked the text of the Ultramatic Primer a bit more.

I also added a note about the park relay overriding the pressure cut-off switch.

WRT links to additional info, I was thinking that the site's collection included the Serviceman's Training Book of Ultramatic hydraulic charts for 24th Series, but darned if I can find it, now.

Maybe you're thinking of this.packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/Ultramatic_part1.pdf

All the hydraulic charts are scattered about in the compilation.
