Here's a nice comparison for the proportions of a '29 645 Dietrich sport phaeton and a '30 745 touring. Simply moving the rear section forward results in much more pleasing proportions... Steve (58L8134), good eye! And moreover necessary to make room for this two cowl design, since the rear passengers are seated almost above the rear axle. How difficult to realize it by leaf springs, mounted in driving direction. Or which kind of springs in which direction are installed? image source: Steve (58L8134)

Hi Guscha
Ray Dietrich intuitively understood pleasing proportions, strove his whole career to impart those to the designs he created. The sport phaeton close-coupled configuration with cowl windshield was not only more intimate but also a better ride and protection from the wind-driven gale for the rear seat occupants. The long 'tub' of the seven passenger touring hark back to the first decades when maximum passenger capacity was the primary objective. Downside was it placed rear seat passengers high above and even behind the rear axle where the ride was the worst. Since Leeedy got the ball rolling, here's a few more of the '34 Twelve 1106 Sport Coupe. It must have been quite an eye-opener in 1934 so unlike anything else on the road. Steve

Hey Steve/Leeedy,
That '34 coupe is STILL an eye-opener. I was looking at it online and see average sell price is $1.227 Mill, with a high end of $3.19!!! those are staggering figures to me and very likely put it out of reach of most folks 'dream car list'. Sure is gorgeous though; I'd never seen one before and 'fell in awe' immediately! (even my colour!) Chris

I had the privilege to see this car in person while getting a personal tour by the owner who owns this (and many more) Packard(s).
This car is impressive and in the top 3 of my favorite cars ever. The total man hours that went into restoring this car are mind boggling.

I remember the white one that was on Long Island when it was an original car.

Hi Guscha
"in 1934 so unlike anything else on the American road." Let me amend my statement for clarification. I thought of the Mercedes-Benz but doubt if they were ever seen on roads here. Hi West "Basically a brand-new body, isn't it?" Is this the Sport Coupe that was badly fire-damaged at one time? Steve May as well add a '34 Eight touring offered by a dealer and a very nice original '34 Eight formal sedan that appeared late Saturday in the car corral.
