NEVER cross polarity when jumping or charging a battery. Positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative!!!!

The original batteries were Group 60 which is pretty much extinct. You'll find a lot of discussion on this site on alternative batteries which will fit the carrier, or modifications to the carrier where needed. I use a Group 27 at the moment, and have used a Group 31 in the past. Neither required modification to the carrier, but the Grup 27 did require a modified hold-down.

If authenticity in appearance is important, you can get an Optima covered with a look-alike Group 60 cover, but the cost is very high.

G'day Mike,
to the discussion and also to PackardInfo. And I invite you to include your '55 400 in the Packard Owner's Registry here on PackardInfo.

Found Mike had also posted this in the Chat Room:

"[mikepettengill] 1:31 am: i recently bought a 55 packard 400,the battery was fried, i noticed positive to ground ,found out this is normal...........my question is there a specific battery designed for this situation ? will any battery be o.k ?if i have to jump it do i positive (jumper) to ground (car)?.....but i don`t know mike"

Thought it would be better to include it here so there's a better picture of Mike's situation.
