Here is a photo of my 1807. Number is on driver's side. Interesting - at least to me - is that fact that the first "C" appears to be retro stamp to make the number conform to being placed in a Custom Super Eight.

Thanks for photo confirming the pre war location.
You're right, you can barely see the first C just off the pad. The B suffix which I think is indicating the clutch type & combo change from original spec looks squeezed in also. They must have had a bunch of numbered engines sitting ready to go and then decided where to use or how to equip them. Would be interesting to see if they did the same with the C in front of the prefix on later series.

According to my engine number table a C precedes the C, D, and E engine number prefixes for the 18th, 19th, and 20th series 180s (i.e., CC, CD, and CE), respectively. Helpful?

As far as stockpiling engines and restamping, the casting date on the block is 9/1/1939 and sales date in Indianapolis is 11/1/1939. So there wasn't a long delay between casting and delivery: exactly two months.

Apparently lots of seniors using that engine were produced in that 2 months. If that's the B suffix for clutch, was started at engine 501610 so 385 engines between that and yours and almost 2000 total. Pretty good build out. Juniors must have really been flying if seniors were going that fast.
