That is a good question. Perhaps the serial numbering started at the casting stage in those older blocks, instead of simply just being stamped after the fact as in later blocks.

This is something that we'll have to figure out on these earlier engines, also when they stopped doing that and went to general casting numbers denoting series of engine. If the serial numbers and the casting numbers are the same on the earlier cars, that may throw a wrench into our plans to do early engines. It would just be too difficult to add every single number!

Here are the numbers from a 1947 Six:
Motor # F39061
Casting Date 7-28-47
Casting # 388532

Also casting number from a 1955 Packard 400 is 440275-A
with Utica number C 12042

I'm starting to wonder if the "A" suffix on 352's means a running change from late '55. That makes me wonder what the change would be. I know in '55 they changed the head chambers from fully machined to cast chambers, I wonder what else they did?? They sure didn't fix the oil pump, lol!

Eric,

A bit late, but yesterdays pic's weren't real good, so I took some more today. And rather than a list, I've given you a visual record for two '39 110 engines, identified as #1 and #2. BTW - I've given the head info too.

Just in from Mat, "packard34", his engine # in his '34 is 392916. Mat, what size is your engine and what's the date?

That would correspond to a 1936 Eight (319 ci) engine.

So Mat has a '36 engine in his '34, interesting...

It looks to me like the casting number for the '30s cars are not dependable to define a series of engine like the later engines are.

The next question is, does anyone know when Packard went to the standard casting number, meaning a series of engines that have the same casting number?

I suspect the car in question has had an engine swap and it's not a matter of casting number inconsistency. I suspect that using a primary indicator like engine numbers will ultimately probably prove to be a more valid source of info than casting numbers.

So another idea I come up with gets shot down by you, figures. I think from now on I'll just ask you what I should do before posting on here and making an ass out of myself.
