My son had what I think is a good idea for the strain relief on the speedometer cable. He mentioned cutting a strip from a soda can and wrapping the section of cable and securing it with a couple of zip ties or small hose clamps.

I already have a few left over metal zip ties that should work well. I guess one of us will just have to have an adult beverage so I can cut up the can. Hmmm…a little extra incentive.

Or pieces of slightly larger tubing:
- Cut a slot lenghtwise in each of them
- Slip them over the affected sections of the
speedo cable
- Crimp them so they're snug
-Use fasteners of your choice to secure them to the speedo cable
This way you'll be able to stregthen and support the speedo cable

After serious degreasing with brake cleaner and more wire brushing, I decide it was time to make it look pretty. This is just the first coat on about 75% around. After it dries, I rotate it and finish the first coat. When, that dries, repeat for a second and final coat.

We talked about this idea as well. I’m going to try the previously method first as it should be a little simpler. As long as it stays in place, I should be good.

It’s looking good! I bought a super-cheap engine stand which makes such work even easier.

Yeah, that would be nice, but I really just don’t have the space.

Here is the result of the speedometer cable strain relief… I ended up just using the nylon zip ties because the metal ones wouldn’t got down small enough.

It feels quite sturdy and should do what I need.

It looks fine but not sure why you wouldn't just replace it as they're not hard to find in good condition. The plastic ties will eventually weather and fall off.
