Perfect, that solves that mystery. I'll fix that tube on the pump and restore the lines to their proper places. This picture shows the vacuum line from the pump to the wipers on my car, it runs along the block and clamps to one of the studs there.

Got a chance to put the fuel pump together after work tonight. I bead blasted the castings after disassembly, and painted the outside surfaces with Rustoleum Titanium engine enamel. I pried open the crimped vacuum tube and got it round again. Then I reassembled the pump with the new parts from my kit, some of the old check valves were staked in place and I had to clean up the castings a bit to fit the new valves. A bit of a challenge to my motor skills to get the pump arms hooked into the diaphagm rod ends, but I got it on the first try. Whew. The kit uses a screen to replace the old filter assembly in the bowl, simple but should work fine. I bought a new spring for the vacuum side to replace my broken one, so now the wipers should get plenty of power.

Very nice work on your fuel pump. Quite the stark contrast from what it looked like before.

Hans, beautiful work on the fuel-vacuum pump. Don't forget to use insulators when you get around to installing the pump on the engine. Much discussion here about insulating the pump from the engine heat.

Thanks guys, I made sure to include a picture of the new parts so you wouldn't think I just gave it a rattle-can overhaul.
I have the insulators and gasket spacer that came off with the pump, ready for reinstallation when I get to that point. Things are finally warming up around here so it's probably time to get back into the hangar with the car, next priority is to finish replacing the brake system - lines are the last piece I need other than shoes and drum refacing if needed.

My real job today involved retrieving an airplane from central Minnesota that had a landing gear problem last month. Flew down there and inspected it last week, not badly hurt, nothing that about $80K won't fix. Funny how quickly that adds up. We put another engine and prop and some other parts on it this week and then I flew it home so we can repair it for real. Luckily we operate several of this type airplane so we could swipe some parts.

Ouch. We had a Spitfire touch a wooden blade while taxing out at the Geneseo air show a few years ago. Not pretty looking at the splintered molded wood blade. The Merlin had to be pulled down for inspection. Luckily the crank was undamaged. It was ball park in price to your engine.

Ah, a Spit is a treasure. This is just a twin Cessna, not really comparable. Kinda like a Packard and a Chevy Suburban.
Spent the afternoon working on the car, I had started removing the dash and today I finished that task. It didn't want to part ways with the car, but eventually I got it free in a shower of mouse scat. I keep thinking there can't be anyplace left to clean out the mouse leavings but I keep finding more anyway. Now I can pull the wires and get to work replacing them, what the mice didn't chew on is very brittle. I also tried to pull the water jacket out but it's stuck tight. I ran a welding rod inside it and the rear 6" or so is plugged with sludge, so I definitely want to get it out to clean. Have to think of a special tool to work it free.

Would using a high pressure water washer and blasting down the inside of the water distribution tube to dislodge the sludge help?
