I handled a 19000 mile 48 Cu8 with chrome headlight bezels and, I believe, a green engine originally.

My favorite place to look is the generator bracket.

Grey was a color Packard was using during the early brass era (single cylinder) and it was lighter than the marine stuff. Supposedly they used it on the Model 30, but I have never seen a picture indicating that. I have found traces of grey on 22-23 series motors that was very light grey. I added that in case anyone doesn't like the grey color because it is not "traditional".

My 23rd series w/288 spent most of it's life a museum car and I don't think the engine has ever been painted (unless done by the museum). The engine color is green. Is that the same green as used on the 56 Executive (junior car) 352ci engines?

Interesting disscussion :
I've owned six 22-23rd. series, all but two of them about 50 years ago. All of them were the gray, maybe just a little bit lighter than the gray used on the 4 and 5-M
2500's. Additionally a 24th. series also gray.

Prewar engines that I've dealt with 282, 320, 385 & 473
were green, although if memory serves me right I seem to remember a couple of 18th series engines ( years ago ) as
being gray.

Just my two bits worth. Packard 385

Perhaps it's worth noting again that the 34 Service Letters note that factory-reconditioned cylinder blocks for the 320 and 385 engines were painted Crane Gray. For how long before and after this was the practice I don't know.

For what it's worth here is a picture from the 288 Eight brochure.

Those illustrators sure made the cars look sleek.

Of the 10 Packards I have hauled from barns and fields that were unmolested 48-50s with 288 or 327 engines, all 10 were grey.

1949 23rd series is green. Engine reportedly has been rebuilt, but it's a low milage car and the engine paint appears to be original.

If it won't move, get a bigger wrench.
If it breaks, it needed fixing anyway.

I am going grey, my Packard that is! My hair is already very much grey, what is left of it!!! So, the question is whic grey?

Is their a paint out there at the Auto parts store, etc. that would be acceptable. If so which brand and name?
