I've been looking at this '49 Packard on ebay. Lots of pictures of an original in pretty descent shape Super Eight. I have a 51 and a 53 Packard and am interested in this....It would serve my purpose to just keep it as a "survivor" status. Any comments or insights? Thanks, Steve

Ross....I've looked at the pix's a dozen times and never noticed the hole on the top of the carb. Are you referring to the welch plug close to the gas line connection?

Agree with it being an Eight. The houndstooth check portions are the original upholstery. The sunvisor is the factory type, not a Fulton. The Buick wheels can be resold easily. Basicaly a correct car - but one which is likely to leave you financially upside down so be careful.

Yep, it's definitely an eight (2292) so the 327 information is unlikely unless there's been an engine swap. It looks to me as if the carburetor has been 'modified' for manual choke operation (which might account for the mystery pull knob under the dash). I'd proceed with caution especially if the reserve is unreasonable for the overall condition of the car.

Thank you JD, I do appreciate your helping me to decide if buying the car is a viable option. I'm on the fence and haven't leaned one way or another yet.......indecision sucks.

Most of the time paying more for a good car ends up paying much less in the long run.Packard parts, and labor is not cheap.

That motor doesn't run so why do business with liars?
There are a lot better cars for sale that need to be taken care of. I didn't notice the carburetor until I read Ross's note, but when I look closer the pulleys are rusted. If it ran they would show a picture with the fan turning over.

Thank you one and all for helping me come to a conclusion concerning the car. I have been the high bidder for two days without satisfying the reserve. What I am willing to pay is one thing.....my max bid was $1200.00 but it would appear that to get the car from New Hampshire to Vancouver, WA It would be more than I would spend on the car. As Tim Cole suggested find a more worthy car. After reading the post by (I believe it was 51packard) who was wondering about buying a car and shipping it, I find that to front the bucks to ship a questionable car, and having not inspected it first is one of those life's lessons that I don't need to relearn. All of the posts on this subject are pearls of wisdom and it took a little while to get the "gotta get this car, no matter what" out of my mind. Thank you for your help.
Regards, Steve.
