Hey Dave..working on the car, good. The hinges hold the trunk lid up; feel how stiff they are and you'll believe me.

This may help you, if I understood your question about springs on the hinges. They only should be mounted one way,to prevent braking them.

The trunk lid and springs on my 115C Convertible Coupe should be the same as the ones on your 120C. Here are some photos of the springs and hinges. Note the springs are mounted in the correct position. Hope they help.
