Well, it has been an eventful weekend. First, my son and I headed down to Reading, PA, for the PAC National meet car show. Tons of beautiful cars, only took a few pictures. Met a couple of friends I had only spoken to online and made a few more too. My son had a good time, and I had an iPad for when he got tired of looking at cars before I did.

Couple of highlights- watching a 1910 roadster giving rides, the 734 boat tail speedster, and seeing a car exactly like mine but fully restored. The owner came home from the hospital in the car! His father bought it brand new. He had it restored a few years ago. Plus got to meet PackardInfo members Flackmaster and OwenDyneto in person.

Still waiting for tools to remove the back of my water distribution tube, but I fixed the #1 connecting rod nuts (thanks for the parts Convert), put the oil pan on, and started cleaning up and painting accessories.

I am planning on installing a '38 exhaust manifold. It looks like I will not need the two outermost exhaust manifold studs- any insight on that?

Have you tried using some bent coat hangers to get the broken distribution tube out? That's what I used to get mine out with no issues. Maybe you can hook one of the holes in it?

The tube isn't broken- it is a nice brass one, but the end popped out of the back of the tube and is hanging out at the very back of the block. I found a 36" lighted mechanics claw for $10 on Amazon, it should be here Tuesday.

Well, it wasn't as easy as I'd hoped, but I got out the end of the tube. I ended up pulling the freeze plug between 5 and 6. The tube end dropped down in between cylinders 5 and 6. I hooked it with a bent piece of mechanics wire fished in through the freeze plug hole, and then my wife was able to hook it with the mechanics claw through the water distribution tube hole. All soldered in, and now the tube is fully installed.

I also put the water pump on, and masked off almost everything I don't want to paint.

I'll post some pictures after I paint the block.

I painted the front engine mount black, based on a restore car I saw at the PAC show, but now I see pictures over at Wade's workshop that his front engine mount is green.I guess I'll do black for now, and change it if I need to.

Hi Ken:

It was a delight to meet you on show day at the Reading Meet, I really enjoyed our time together chatting about things Packard and other. I don't know what Packard's engine paint scheme was in 37 but postwar the engines were painted with the mount already attached and thus it was engine color as shown by this factory assembly line photo.

Best of luck with your project car, I look forward to hearing more about your progress.

Dave

The engine front mount on my factory original 36 120 is black. The front mount on the spare 36 120 engine (41k miles) is black.

Ken, please note that the photo caption says it is a 22nd series car being assembled. Pre-war cars may have had the engine mount brackets painted black.

Yep, I have multiple reports of black, so I am sticking with it. Thanks all for the info.
