while i do use the sand blaster when i leave the hardware attached and loose, it leaves the hardware in a rough state even though it is clean. i like the hardware to have that polished look and the wire brush on my bench grinder shines the metal at the same time and the blaster does not. i use my vice grips and i don't have the flying across the room problem. while it is tedious, i just like the results better i suppose. especially on hardware that doesn't get painted like on the inside of the electric motor for the torsion unit. the mounting bolts are not painted inside...so i polish them off on the wire brush which seals them up and makes them shinny, even though noone will see them, i will know i guess and sometimes i am anal about that stuff.
while your way is good, it is just my preference to have them shinny and my steel grit leaves them clean and dull. i want clean and shinny ;0) LOL!

we crossed that at the oreily's also but it was really small for some reason. the 11079 crossed to the 3638, but it was WAY too small. the one that came out was 446090 packard number and it was a full metal casing with the seal inside. it was very large. i could not get it out, so i had to use my air chisel to chisel one section out so that it would loose grip and then i pulled it out by hand. luckily i didn't hit the housing but a couple of times and it didn't do any damage, so it should be fine.
the one in my other thread that show the picture of it will better show you what it looks like. the one from the 57-68 packard almost fits, but i don't think it would be functional anyways. maybe your pictures are distorting the size to me, but the 3638 at oreily's was small, really small, as in i don't think it would have even fit over the pinion shaft.

i will post a picture of my mangled pinion seal and you will see that it is larger than the 3638. at least 2-3" outside diameter i would guess.

okay, i did some more work on the rear axle tonight. got the brake drums off with a puller from Autozone that i rented. just happened to be the PERFECT fit! so if you need one, rent the one in the picture, it worked flawlessly and best of all you get your money back when you are done.
took pics of everything i have been talking about, so enjoy. Hank Attach file: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Good to know AutoZone has those pullers for rent for those that dont have a tapper axle puller. I have this old-school beast for my rear-drums. (I think the drums are just scared of it, and just fall off!)

did some more work on the torsion motor, etc....also finished tearing down the rear differential. someone before me put in new axle bearings and i assume new oil seals too, but i plan to replace them anyways.....(just the seals, not the bearings as they are still good) you can see the replacement bearing number and also one of the outside seals was a NATIONAL seal, so i am pretty sure one of the parts stores will have them in stock. just not the pinion seal! LOL!!
there was lots of sludge in the pumpkin, nasty stinky stuff. mmmmmm yummmmmyyyy! anyone wants some, i will mail it to ya! LOL j/k ![]() ![]() i used liquid electric tape on the connection points for the electric parts. the only thing i think i may have mad a mistake is painting the back side of the brain box where it mounts to the frame....going to need that to be metal on metal for the ground...oh well i will just scrap it off when i go to mount it up again. sometimes you just can't think of everything. live and learn. update...i just scrapped the plasti dip off and it worked great! the brake pads look newish too. the only thing i can't figure out is why there whey those shim plates on driver's side axle and not on the passengers.....is that some kind of placement thing for how far the axle goes in?? any suggestions there?? i have marked the order they came off so i know how to put them back. one of the shims is think the other is wafer thin. the axles came of with a few good tugs by hand, probably because of how new the bearings are, so i didn't have to rig up my special tool! ;0) checked all the electrics after i put the brain box back on...and it all worked except the solenoids made some bad noises, but i think it was because i didn't ground the brain box. if i did it the bypass way the solenoids clicked perfectly fine. so i am not worried. i just hope i never have to take that thing apart again....what a PITA!!! sealing all that stuff up with the liquid electric tape. well, enjoy my weekends work..... later dudes, Hank ![]() BigKev.....is there a way to upload more than one pic at a time....this is killing me!
