Absolutely, I definitely learned to trust but verify. The next car I looked at (story to follow) I sure to look at in person.

Well - to bring this thread back to life after a little more than a month from when I started it - I've finally done the deed and purchased a 1955 Patrician....and not just any Patrician, but this one:
packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=18714&forum=10 After things didn't work out with the other one Fred Kanter himself reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in purchasing this lovely, original car from his & Dan's own collection. I couldn't believe my luck, the opportunity and the fact that Fred even thought to offer this car to me. It comes home on Tuesday after a little minor work and some tweaking to get it running right after a long slumber.....there were a few hiccups which weren't at all related to the car (I've been cursing USAA for 2 weeks now). But now I can finally say I'm the man who owns one...and it's because of Fred & Dan.

Here are a few pictures I snapped when I went and saw the car for the first time. You'll also see the cracking paint from a very old repair and then finally two pictures of that being fixed.

Agreed. Good looking car. Wonder what they forgot to do or went wrong to make the paint let go of the primer.

If I remember correctly what Fred said was due to the much older nature of the repair it was done with clay, instead of having the dent pulled out. Over time with temperature fluctuations the clay expanded and contracted which eventually lead to the pain failure.
Fred's top notch guys are made sure it was repaired right this time. It was so tempting to do other work, but I'm determined to keep it as original as possible and not make it a showstopper restoration. I want to drive it and not be holding my breath for a stone chip or a little rain....not that I'd seek out driving it in the rain lol

The "they" who did an incorrect fender repair sometime before 1973 was not me or brother Dan. The dents were filled in with Nitro-Stan or similar better known as red putty which is a final filler to take care of small irregularities and in places it was 1/2" thick.
The only mistake we made was trading a running but shabby '56 Caribbean convertible for the Patrician, it was a single color Maltese Grey with a white/pink/grey interior. The Patrician was run at nearly 100 MPH around the Packard test track in MIchigan

Finally home, safe and sound. First lesson learned on my first Packard? Let the poor car warm up.
Nervous doesn't even begin to explain how I felt and feel. It'll fit int he garage with practice, but I'm also having it expanded just enough to fit easier.
