There are a few liberties taken in the newspaper article that apparently resulted in statements in the PPG signage.

Of course the newspaper dated the first Pan American as "1951' but while it was based on a converted 1951 convertible, the first Pan American was always officially considered to be a 1952 concept car. It was created in 1952... for the 1952 International Motor Sports Show in New York. All this car ever had in connection to 1951 was the body (which was hugely modified by Henney) and mechanicals.

Also while the newspaper may refer to "the family of Alvan Macauley" Pan Am #1 actually became the property of Edward Macauley... son of Alvan. It was Ed's penchant to endlessly modify every car he got his hands on. It was Edward's wife who tricked the car out with jeweled medallions and the big "M" on the hood in place of the Packard crest that was originally there.

Finally, while the newspaper article shows the car as it appeared in 1952, it was hugely, hugely modified over several years, resulting in something that looks nothing like the original. In other words, a modification of Henney's modification... and then a modification of the modification... of the modification ... of the modification. Subsequent photos, articles and signage never explain all these differences. Therefore things become hopelessly confusing for the casual observer who tries to figure out how Pan Am #1 ended up looking like the morph it is today.

By the way, the rear end of Pan Am #1 as it is now was grafted onto the car from molds of the Packard Panthers. This was done (at Ed Macauley's request) by Creative Industries of Detroit.

Mal, thank you for the additional pics. 10 years it had escaped my notice that both of us are experts in door emblems. How about an "M" on your bonnet too?
