Are you saying that you must pull the tires and remove the shafts?

Of course as the shafts must be pulled because the brake backing plates, as I recall, hold everything in place. You have to remove them which requires removing the wheels. I know of no cars, at least not older ones, where this is not the case.

Thanks for the info! It did seem like the.axels needed to be pulled, but I couldn't find any info stating so.

Since the axles are driven by the differential, you've got to back them out a couple of inches to free up the pumpkin. Pretty standard construction, not unique to Packard. Great opportunity to inspect and repack the rear wheel bearings, renew shaft seals at the same time.

Thanks again for the help. I also have a Model A Ford and it is not necessary to remove the axels to remove the front of the pumpkin.

"I also have a Model A Ford and it is not necessary to remove the axels to remove the front of the pumpkin"
I had a Model A and don't recall it having a "pumpkin" as such. An enclosed drive line(torque tube) bolted to the front of the differential centre section. Of course that was a long time ago, about 50 years, so the memory may not be as good as it once was.
