I took the 54 Packard Clipper Deluxe to my mechanic because I noticed some gas dripping from the fuel pump. My mechanic tried to tighten down the fuel pump as a fix. I just spoke with him and he told me that didn't fix the leak and that I need a new fuel pump. Ok - no problem but he said he is having a hard time tracking one down. I can find one so thats not a problem but he mentioned he could put in a Carter electronic fuel pump that would work just fine. I don't have the name or model of what he is suggesting but let me ask. Would I be better off going with the Carter type double action, the original in the Max Merit catalog or using the electric one that he says would work just fine. He also mentioned that the vacuum assisted was not hooked up? Is this something I should be concerned with? thanks

Although there are some who would disagree, I think you should either have your existing pump rebuilt (about a week turnaround from Gould Rebuilders or others), or buy a rebuilt one exchange from someone like Kanter Bros, Max Merritt, etc.

Electric fuel pumps have their uses, but I don't favor using them as a full-time fuel pump.

Replying to my own note. I decided to go all original in the event I want to show the car. I have a Carter Fuel pump on the way to me and I read the other post on fuel pumps that helped me understand what the vacuum assist does. This is a great forum - thanks

There is a how-to article on the website here on how to rebuild that exact fuel pump yourself. All you need to buy is the rebuild kit which costs about $50.
