When replacing the four rubber bushings in the front sway bar, do I need to be wary of preload or any tension that might be suddenly released when I back off the nuts?

No. The bar is passive unless cornering.

I just put new bushings on my '53. I placed the bushings in a pot of water and brought them to a boil. Then put some dish soap on the bar, and was able to easily slide them on. When cold and dry, I couldn't get them on the bar.

Actually the primary purpose of those bars is to reduce rebound when a wheel goes over a pothole. The bar slows the downward motion and mitigates the shock to the vehicle. Hence the term stabilizer bar. I think the term "sway bar" was developed by a marketing department somewhere.

I put new ends on my 22nd . I marched up a set of poly bushing end kit from energy suspension . Much better and cheaper than reproduction parts .

Not unless it's bent.
It does transfer some force to the other side by torque, hence the anti-sway terminology.
The early cars without tended to side roll badly.
