I have located a good used 1941 transmission with r9 overdrive. The guy said its out of a 1941 jr car and to put it in a 1941 super 8 the pilot shaft would have to be changed. I was wondering if that could be taken out by removing the bolts around the pilot shaft in the front or dose the trans and overdrive have to be disassembled to do that?

It has to be pretty completely disassembled to allow dropping the countershaft. Also the junior R9 will have only 3 overdrive pinions instead of 4--a bit twee for a senior car.

If my car I would continue to look for a senior transmission. The nose and input shaft would both need to change to the larger size for the junior trans to fit the clutch. The bigger issue is the junior R9 OD on the new box is of lighter construction and has a planetary gearset and overrunning clutch with 3 pinions while the senior R9-A-1 OD is much larger with 4.

Based on some findings others have made when repairing their senior OD units the smaller planetary was installed as a repair part at some point and was in sad shape thus causing the problems. Even if you make the input shaft swap the junior OD may not be able to withstand the torque of the large engine long term so you would probably need to address that too.

On one of the pictures it appears to be a R9-a1 which I believe is for the 356

Thanks for the tip but at some point in the post it says its a jr transmission

It does say that - mistakenly - but it is obviously a senior transmission by the diameter of the pilot.

Bill Aske had 2 rebuilt at Hershey last year. I was unable to reach him, but you could try ​410-357-8901

I have a couple of 356 transmissions lying about the place. With overdrives - R9s.


They're not all nice and shiny like the ones in the picture.


Then again, like as not they don't cost as much, either.
