If you're not having fun, maybe it's your own damned fault.

Bear, since the original only puts out 35 amps, get a positive-ground, 6-volt, 55-amp alternator from Jim's Battery Manufacturing, Youngstown, OH (800) 426-7580. Absolutely no butchering required.
If this rankles any purists, alternators were used in War II wireless vehicles, ambulances, some tow trucks, and radio taxis after the war. They not only put out more power, but weigh less, are more compact, require less maintenance. Had Packard survived into the late '50s, 1960, am sure they'd have installed an alternator at their service departments, as they would've later embraced radial tires, better motor oil, molybdenum/graphite grease instead of the orange fiber sort, DOT 5 silicone brake fluid, lighter, stronger spiral wound batteries like Optima, etc., since like most automakers, Packard didn't make such. In the win-win-win, you'll get brighter head and taillights at dusk, night, and low city speeds, faster battery recovery. Again, weight is the enemy in any serious road car, luxe or not, and Bentley's new '52-on Continental achieved an absolute maximum 119 mph on test by highly inflating the tires, removing the backseat and spare tire. Please tell Jim and Dolores that the late Hans Edwards, '47 Custom Super, British Columbia, and Mike, '47 Super Clipper, Walnut Creek, CA referred you.

If you look up the Autolite decoder, you'll find more that will fit.
The last letter is the pulley, and usually that's reused/not with the gen. Gens are still fairly accessible in the reman market. All you do is forfeit the core charge, if you have no exchange. You can change the end plates also if they don't fit your configuration/bolt pattern. P used both Autolite and Delco in '49s. Usually, you match the distributor and VR.
