That's the exact puller I've used since the '60s and it's always gotten off any drum I have, even the huge 14" ones on Henney-Packards.

The other side took about 5 good whacks with a 2# dead blow hammer to pop off, which actually still seems too low, but whatever. I'll torque it down properly on reassembly. ![]() Per everyone's advice I am not removing more than one axle at a time.

I thought hitting the end of the puller was a no-no? Doesn't that damage the thrust block when you hit the axle like that?

Thanks redhexagon. I already have them off and used the method you describe with red grease on the contact point and on the puller threads.
Kevin, the puller we are talking about is the correct type. Maybe you are thinking of the "knock out" type? By the way I didn't see any shims come off either axle.

As shown in the picture, only hammer on the dog bone ends, not the center of the puller.

Yes, that's the way I've always understood it/done it. This quote from Red is what threw me off: "2. Hit the end of the puller hard straight-on with a sledge hammer several times". I wanted to bring it up so that the was no confusion for others who will read this in the future.

I glossed over his phrasing. I wonder if he's thinking of a different type.
