she figured you guys would say that. LOL! she wasn't mad at all, she loves helping out in the garage. since we had Henry she hasn't been able to do so as much and when she does she likes it. she isn't like most wives, which is great for me!

no on to the question, what of the steering box?

later,

Hank

If it's not leaking, I would just clean it up and paint it & leave well enough alone for now. Messing with the seals really requires proper tools to remove and replace. In all the years, have yet to see one with any real problems that required disassembly. If later on there appears to be an issue, it is easy enough to get to. Chances are the lube, while old, is in perfectly fine condition also. If you do want to change, then specs say it's just ordinary SAE 90 multipurpose gear lubricant or oil.

well, i guess it is a good thing i like to know how everything works. i took the drain plug of of the steering gear box and wouldn't ya know.....dry as a bone and very very dirty and nasty. lots of crude in there that HAS to go. there is no room for that on this car.

so, i took it apart, see pics, and i will rebuild. theoretically if i put it all back together the same way it should be fine.

the shims on it really are just paper gasket material and there were 3 shims and 1 red grease seal, then the plate.

enjoy.

Hank

Have never seen one in that condition. Between the leveler and now this, how many feet of water was the car sitting in?

it wasn't really sitting in any water per say, just in a field. i am only guessing that water got into the leveler at some point in it's life. i think this is just a leaking/ been sitting for a while example. some of the grease was still there, but really caked onto the walls of the inside. the white stuff i am guessing is baking soda from when i got the frame done. still, it needed to be cleaned out.

although i am not really sure why Max charges 225 for a rebuild kit for this box, i am probably going to reuse the bearing etc after i get the good and clean and greased. the seals are all i really need and they are decently priced.

the oil seal i will try to find a match for at autozone on their wall of seals.

later,

Hank

finally an update, although not a large one. took the steering box out of the tank of degreaser finally, after about 1 month simmering ;0) it was really easy to clean up as you can imagine. if anyone thought it was impossible to get the arm piece that connects to the pitman arm off the end plate....well it is possible without taking the bolt out. there is a trick to it and i did it on accident as noted by my frustration trying to get it back on with out disturbing the factory setting on that bolt on the end plate. i got it though, luckily.

painted stuff with rust converter, letting it dry good for final paint.

put on the dust boots on the connecting pieces. eventually you will see an update with the steering all put together again.

sorry i have been gone so long, but it sure did feel good to get out in the garage again.

later dudes,

Hank

I'll second Mal's comment. I thought you might have been worn down and just taking a breather. I will be glad to see the steering box reinstalled.
