Just listed today on FB Marketplace:

1948 Custom Eight Convertible Victoria. Unrestored car that needs everything but looks solid and complete with a nice straight body still wearing its original Cavalier Maroon paint. Previous owner passed away before being able to begin restoration and son is now selling for the family. This one looks like a very worthy project. Asking $10K. Cleveland, OH:

This Packard has been for sale for a while. It is at a PA classic car dealership, and I think it is significantly overpriced. But it is a beautiful car:

1937 120 Sport Coupe with rumble seat. Frame off restored car. Beautiful, but expensive:

Not a critique, but it's kind of funny to me to see seat belts added to the inside seats but not the rumble seats.

Good Morning...I doubt most of us could get out of a rumble seat. Definitely easier to climb in than to climb out. Prehaps fun for Grandchildren...but that's about it. Ernie in Arizona.

There's a reason it's called a mother in law seat. The wind hits you from both sides whirling around the cab. It's really not very comfortable. It's fun for parades but that's it. Last time I had someone in it she laid down just to be out of the wind.

I've heard of mother in-law seats but not in reference to rumble seats. I had always thought that mother in-law seats were a single high-up seat behind the regular passenger area and were found on far-earlier cars than this. Since maybe the term carried over, I looked it up online and nearly every rumble seat photo comes up under mother in-law seat so apparently either I was mistaken or the terms are now synonymous through use (or misuse)!

I wonder if rumble seats vs. mother-in-law was influenced by the demographics that purchased the cars. I have tended to see rumble more often referenced with say your Fords and the mother-in-law name seems like it may be an artifact from the early cars that had chaperone seats that were intended to ensure "proper" behavior on dates and outings.

When I see them in coupes and not convertibles it seems like a cruel joke or someone drew the short straw type of seating (weather dependent). I also wonder if the ride in a rumble seat is like a sidecar on a motorcycle, seems cool, fun and neat but in reality you might feel better driving.

We often use our rumble seat as it a novelty for folks to go with us sitting back there.

And correct, much easier to get in the it is to get out.

It much easier for kids, they are more pliable and fearless.

But I will say, there is infinitely more leg room in the rumble seat area.

I remember that 1954 Pacific in Nevada, when the young man inherited it from the original owner. He was intimidated by it and wasn't interested in it. He quickly sold it, and it has changed hands at least 4 times, with each dealer or person selling it doubling the price.
