This is not my air filter, but is this correct, or what is it supposed to look like? This looks a bit like a farmer fix to me. Nothing against farmers, I grew up on a farm!

Not correct, at least according to the one I have. The liner on the lid is darker and finer that what is in the picture. The space between the mesh grids is supposed to be strands of metal shavings that are to be coated in oil to capture debris. I can get pictures for you tomorrow if you'd like.

I went back out to the shop and grabbed some pictures. Probably won't have time tomorrow.

The liner on the lid:

The liner can come loose and get sucked down, blocking air flow. I had previously glued mine. Looks like the glue failed. I noticed a lack of power on a drive today....could very well be this:

And that style of filter will only fit the 2 bbl carbs. Your Cavalier should have a 4 bbl.

Choreboy Pot Scrubbers make an excellent element replacement.

Your air filter housing should look like the one pictured.
Note that I have replaced the oil bath with a modern paper filter. The pictured air filter element is a perfect fit from O'Reiley.

Correct, this filter belongs to a guy that messaged me. He has a 51.

I have the correct "heavy duty", and very cool looking, filter on my Cavalier.

Yep, I've got the correct filter on my Cavalier. I like the oil bath, so haven't put a paper filter in.

The oils bath type is very free-flowing while the paper element that it wasn’t designed for can cause all sorts of problems.
