Correct. Only 54-55 had the "sore-thumb" taillights. 55 added the backup light directly underneath. 54 the backup lights which were the same style as previous years and were simply an "add-on" that bolted on through the lower trunk filler panel.

I always liked the 1954 senior and the 1955 Clipper backup lights as they didn’t look like an afterthought! For course, the 1955 senior and all 1956s had them built-in too.

OMG! This discussion of differences between 1955 and 1956 Clippers and senior Packard cars is actually taking place. And the subject vehicle is a 1955 Clipper with a shocking pink interior. With the instrument panel growing a pink beard. With pink overpaint on the transmission gear indicator window. With the vehicle windows tinted limo black. With a 1956 Clipper serial number. For sale in a world-wide auction. With a rusted exterior proudly proclaimed to have "patina"– perhaps purposely created and then proudly credited to a shop. This done via a pop-riveted plate attached to the body a la coachbuilder style! This is actually happening in October of the year 2024.
I am tempted to quote the words of Edward G. Robinson's character in the movie, Soylent Green... as he weeps and says, "...how did we ever come to this?..." But no. I wont say those words. By the way... Soylent Green was set in the year, 2022. Think about it...

Well.....every car is not perfect. And the owner can do anything they want with their own car, and sell it when they want. If someone feels so strongly that the mods should be reversed back to stock, they should buy the car and restore it. There are a lot of lower level V8 Packards out there for sale, and let's face it, not all of them will get perfectly restored or even back on the road. Personally, I'm glad this one is still running and not crushed.
As far as the serial number plate, the buyer needs to beware. Hopefully a potential buyer will do some research and realize something is wrong. Maybe they will show up here to ask questions, and see this thread.

Giving this ugly P.O.S. some thought, I see it has a 352 engine. I don't know if the 352 was an option for the Super in '55 (I've never seen one), and I've only had '56 Clippers (2) Patricians (2) 400 (1) '53 Pat and '41 160. I'm thinking engine was swapped in from a '56 Custom and the car is titled on the engine #. Could be an R title. In any case, it's a good one to stay away from.PB

They likely have no clue what engine is in it and probably just looked up what a 1956 Clipper should have and went from there. Other than the engine number which I doubt they looked at, there is little to differentiator one from another.
