Thanks Gary...that helps I did see just a bit of cork left where you mentioned. But, I'm not sure what you mean about the notch or raised lump.

The side plates with the grind mark or raised lump, are used in only one side of the shackle.
Which is the side of the hex with the star washer. Supposedly the threads on that side plate has a binding thread.

Thanks for the clarification, Gary. I’m not seeing any marks on the side plates, but I do know that one side definitely has binding threads.

Well, I finished a wood working project for my wife, so today was spent wiping down everything in the garage to get rid of all the saw dust. I decided a few months back that I’m really lucky to have a wife who has given me the green light on all things Packard….she really wants to see the car done as well.

So, she’s wanted a laser engraver/cutter for a while and I finally got her one. But, we then decided we needed a dedicated table for it, the associated air cleaner and accessories. The table is done, but just have to wait for the finish to cure before moving the engraver.

Anyway, when I was finishing with getting the garage cleaned up, I was still in a cleaning mood and decided to clean up/degrease the new transmission. I used a little Simple Green and and a couple small wire brushes.

Looks good! To save on elbow grease, I often use a cheap carburetor aerosol for cleaning smaller parts although one has to be careful of anything plastic on it as it could be damaged.

Believe me, I thought about how much easier carb cleaner would make things. But, it was kind of a spire of the moment thing and I didn’t feel like making a trip to the auto parts store.

I really should buy brake cleaner by the 55gal drum. It would be cheaper, but it really does dissolve just about any grease or grime.

Purple power concentrate…. You can get big jugs at autozone… etc…. Pour that into a big plastic storage bin…. Large enough for the trans to fit in. Make sure there is NO aluminum…. Seriously… it’ll eat aluminum up!!! Soak the trans in that for about 2 days…. It’ll be stupid clean. In my 55 blog… I think I called it the witches brew. It did all the work for me…. And was much better then simple green. Same stuff I use to make the white walls white again. I used it over and over and over in the same bin….it liquified any dirt or grease that settled to the bottom. But any aluminum…. Remove it first.

Just mix 1 part acetone, 1 part toluene, and 3 parts denatured alcohol. Optional add ½ part 93 octane gasoline. That's pretty much the formula for every non-chlorinated brake cleaner out there.

I was just tinkering in the garage in between other chores to get done. I took a close look at the speedometer cable that came with my “new” transmission with R11 overdrive.

I pulled the cable out of the housing and it is in very good condition. It was just very dirty, so I cleaned it up.

The housing has a couple of spots of concern. I think it will be okay, but I would like some thoughts on adding some strain relief at the end with that connects to the transmission.

In this photo, you can see the housing as an issue. The cable spins very smoothly, but this area of the housing is obviously weakened. Any thoughts on adding some strain relief in this area?

The other spot is about a third of the way down the cable from the speedometer end. It isn’t too bad and I’m not really concerned about this spot. It’s hard to see in the photo, but there is a slight separation of the housing.
