I'm putting a 51 - 288 engine back together , Ive used the front mount from a 48 engine as it will suit the car I'm putting the engine into.

When building an engine I always hook up an external 12v oil pump to prime the galleries & fill the oil pump prior to start up.

I hooked up the pump & ran it & was at a bit of a loss to see most oil coming out the front , I assume the open oil hole behind the cam gear. Is this correct . I checked on the other blocks I have here and the hole is open, theres nothing missing when compared to the parts diagram. I'm inclined to pull the cover off & put a restrictor in the hole.

There is a picture of same hole on another block, with cam gear removed, No pressure is registering on my guage, Pump can push 40psi Maybe the problem is im pumpinfg oil into galler on wrong side of engine, I can't see that making any difference.

Yes, that's perfectly normal. It needs the front cover on to keep the oil inside where it belongs!

Thanks guys, well yes I know its to lube the camchain, but it seems excessive. I'll leave it be then & hopefully oil pressure will rise when the engines own oil pump is turning. Will keep you posted.

I use engine prelube on the bearing shells, seals, etc. then basically lube the rod bushing and side of piston/cylinder with engine oil. You can even dunk the whole piston in oil and let it drain off a bit upright before installing.
