1937 120/138CD striping

Can anyone tell me definitively what the striping on my car should be? I know the double stripe from the spear down the length of the car. I also know what the two double lines on the wheels should be.

But, I have seen cars with and without striping around the hood louvers.

Looking at all of the various sales brochures for 1937 isn’t much help as it is nearly impossible to tell if I’m seeing a stripe or just a reflection on along the top edge of the bump out for the hood louvers. I’m leaning toward it just being a reflection.

Anyway, I’ve come across pictures of restored cars with a lot of variations. Some have no stripes near the louvers, some have a single stripe just above the louvers, and some have a single stripe above and a single stripe below the louvers

I posted it here because not everyone looks at individual blogs. So yes, in my opinion, there was a need to get it to a more general forum.

Also, in individual blogs, it can easily be “lost” as it is no longer readily visible once it falls off the “recent forum topics” list. I know I don’t necessarily check in on everyone’s blog, but I do check in on the questions that have been posted in the general forums.

Don B: I concur...I would not have seen this on your blog...too many things fly by at the speed of light and too little time in our lives to notice them...a targeted Posting title did get my attention.

I have some Senior Twelve photos of pinstriping but I am not expert enough on a 120 to answer your questions.

Don, my car is too far away to go look, but zooming in closely on several of the pictures I have, there is no pinstriping around the louvers. I believe there was only pin striping on the raised piece of the hood, just below hinge between the tops of the hood and the sides. The snow has melted, so I may be getting my car this weekend, if so I'll look in person. I can send you some pictures if needed.

Thanks, Ken. The best I can tell is that there wasn’t any striping around the louvers, but I’ve seen a lot of pictures with a number of variations. I don’t need pictures, but I would love confirmation from your car being a known original.

Hi Don,
I saw it in both spots but had no luck in finding an answer. I suspect it was dealer applied and likely was dependent on the individual striper's style.
I have attached images from the cover of Kanter which have supplied parts to restore these cars since Packard stopped making them, maybe before!
Hope this helps,
Bob J.

Thanks, Bob.

The pictures you posted are interesting, yet another variation of the many I’ve seen. This is the first one I”ve seen with a different color background. All others I’ve seen, you just have the body color and then a different color stripe. I do know that in the Packard list of colors, the junior cars were listed with a body color, wheel color and stripe color. So, I don’t think the Kanter pictures are a version that would have been supplied by Packard, but who knows.

I’ve done some more searching on line. I’m seeing two general variations:
1. Cars with some variation of striping by the louvers also have many variations of the stripe that goes down the length of the car. None of which math how my car was originally.. I have pictures of just enough of my original stripe down the length of the car to know how it was.

2. Cars with stripes down the length of the car that match mine, do not have any striping around the louvers. I’m thinking the examples below are good depictions of what it should be.

I'd recommend you go here:

digitalcollections.detroitpubliclibrary. ... ll_fields_et%3A%281937%20packard%29

And look through the pictures there which you can zoom in and possible see the pinstripping. Most of the are either Packard factory or early photos of original cars.
