It's best to rebuild or replace brake cylinders in pairs anyway but be sure that whatever you do, you use the size specified.

Yes but there is a proportion of master cylinder volume and wheel cylinder effective area that needs to be maintained so that the master cylinder has enough fluid to extend the wheel cylinders, yet they can back off sufficiently when the brake is released.

Though, since the brake springs pull the cylinders "in" when brake pressure is off, I don't think you could easily get past the baseline "off" position in the wheels, so there would never really be enough fluid in the master to extend them all.

So it's possible that the larger size of cylinders makes it so the master runs out of fluid before the brakes are fully engaged. This makes sense with what I was seeing on my test drive. As seen in the video, braking at 50 mph was only slowing me down so much, even with the pedal fully applied. New cylinders, proper adjustments, and bleeding will hopefully solve an those issues.

What I find a little odd is that the BTV was the same for both Clipper and Packard so running the Clipper rear cylinders shouldn't be a problem, in that regard. Perhaps someone put fronts on all 4 wheels.

I'll measure when I get the old ones off, but I'm thinking they are at least 1 1/8" in the rear which is larger than the Clipper. Plus the Clipper had 11" drums vs the 12". Not sure how much of a difference that makes in regards to cylinder size.

Your car should have 1 1/8 in the front and 1" in the rear. That automatically gives the correct braking proportion between front and rear to prevent rear wheel skids.

I am guessing that someone installed the small cylinders on the front which would greatly reduce your braking power. You will know soon enough when you get a chance to look

Also want to underline that when adjusting your rear brakes, make certain that the e-brake system is not holding the shoes away from the anchor pins. That really diminishes the effectiveness of the self servo action built into the system. Might want to drop a steel scale in your drums and make sure they are not more than .06" over 12" dia. Thin drums fade quickly.

Thanks Ross. The car goes back on the lift after work today, so I'll have a better idea of what I'm dealing with once I get all the drums off.

I did go back and review your brake adjustment video (thanks for making it) and was reminded to back off the e-brake before adjusting the shoes. I'll be sure to do that when I redo all the adjustments.

Good call on measuring the drums. I'll look into that and see if I can find someone with the right tool.

Here is a Bendix drum brake assembly drawing for Hudson cars (typical of 40's and up Clipper front brakes).

Thanks PGH. Very cool diagram.

I had a couple minutes today to remove the radiator. Lower hose was tough because it was stuck pretty good to the transmission cooler. Got it off and the radiator out. Noticed one of the rows of fins is totally detached and flopping around. So that's not encouraging. I'll be taking the radiator from the car and the spare that came with it to the radiator shop on Monday. We'll see what they say about both of them

Here's the one from the car

And the spare radiator. Totally different core on this one.

Neither of these part numbers show up in the parts list.

MC stand for McCord, which is/waa a manufacturer of radiator, mufflers, and other parts. That is probably their part number.

Mojave.

It was a 170 bucks just to clean mine.

The Ford radiator 4 row you can get around 250. Aluminum.

That will be the way I go when this radiator gives up.

I'll move the top hose fitting to the center.
