Ok..I decided to by pass my electric fuel pump so I can determine if the mechanical one can work on its own before I reinstall electric as a primer…so I installed it and turned over car foe some time…no fuel pulled into glass bowl…took pump back out and apart and saw that it was stuck somewhere…loosed it up and crank down arm and now it appears to working correct…reinstalled the pump and turned over a few times and eventually the glass bowl filled to top with gas..but car won’t start..looks like I’m not getting fuel up to carb from the pump…when I bench tested it ..I could feel air push out when cranking the arm…so I’m lost as to why it won’t push gas up to carb?…I got the bowl to fill by pouring a little gas in carb so it would sputter and draw gas from tanks..which it did…any ideas?? Tks

I deleted my previous post as I should have read through the entire thread as you had included an image of the pump with the glass bowl on it, I apologize.
Have you tested the output pressure of the pump? It could have been rebuilt a while ago and the diaphragm may have cracked? (Especially if it had fuel with an ethanol additive.) A typical gauge as the one pictured does engine vacuum and also has a pressure side for the older style pumps. This can tell you how well your pump is working. Between 2-4lbs PSI is normal. I did test it…so I prefilled the glass bowl today and hit carb two times with starter fluid and she finally took fuel..worked fine , however, it has pretty good leak at what I thinks is at the gasket the splits the pump…leaks pretty bad when running…but it is working now…I guess I will have to buy a rebuild kit unless I can just get that gasket…or use a gasket sealer that can be used in fuel..I’m researching my options now!

If you or the seller does not know the pump history I would opt for a new rebuild kit with ethanol safe rubber. If it has been a while since a rebuild or history is unknown, leaking gaskets aside, the pump might have old internal rubber parts that will not last very long when running modern gas full of todays additives or if it contains ethanol..

Quote:
That is not a gasket, that is the diaphragm that is actuated by the arm on the cam shaft that pushes the fuel through the line. HH56 is absolutely correct, you need a rebuild kit to bring her right back to like new operation. Bob J.

I bought a fuel pump kit from a guy makes them and when I discovered it was missing compression springs I simply asked if he had them to sell, not voicing anger at not verifying all the parts included or asking about a refund, and the guy never even replied saying "sorry, I don't include those". Needless to say, I'll never get anything from him again. So, if you are looking confirm the parts. If you want to know who it was send me a message.

Ok .yes it’s the diaphragm ..that has the screws running through it…I took it apart and cleaned it well..but probably just sat too long…I have found a kit at Then and Now Automotive which is pretty close to me in Massachusetts….I will ask about if the kit is made with ethanol resistant material like the carb rebuild kits are..tks for all the help..I’ll let you on the rebuild..!
