Very informative thread as I am replacing and trying to fix my antenna on my '48 convertible. Is that large metal Bracket part of how the antenna attaches to the inner fender? If so, I am missing it. Looks easy enough to make. What are the dimensions?
Greg

If you mean this lower mounting plate, I can provide dimensions but plate is for a 47. Since the 48 fenders are wider and the 22-23 series antenna is somewhat differently made and might be mounted in a different spot as well, I can't say how or even if the plate would fit your car but at least it might give you a starting point.

The overall plate size is 2" wide x 5 1/4 long. Thickness is about 1/16". The two small holes are 1/4 in diameter and centers are 1/2" from each edge which leaves 1" between the two centers. The oval slot is 5/16 wide x 5/8" long with center at 1" from the sides and end edges.

The plate is bent at a slight diagonal angle starting 1" from the hole end edge and ending 1 1/2 from the slot end. Can't tell you the precise angle but if the hole end is laying on a flat surface the oval end corner is raised 1 1/4 off the surface.

Howard, do you have that same detail for the antenna support for my '53 Cavalier? The rust mites have eaten most of it.

1953 was electric only, correct? If so, I can get some dimensions when I'm next at my shop as I have a few antenna assemblies laying around. I may even have a spare bracket.

Yes, antenna is electric. Thank you! No rush, this will be part of my front fender project, after I'm done with rear fenders and rockers.

Sorry but I don't have a 51-4 model and my 56 has rear antennas so totally different.

If you have a power antenna I have a decent copy of the 54 mounting instructions which has a good view of the brace. Viewing the illustration you could get a good idea as to the shape and where it mounts. Unless Don can provide the measurements you would need to measure your car to provide your own dimensions and guesstimate of the bend angles.

Believe except for the coiled shape and length of the storage tube on the units that holds the pulled thru nylon cable, the basic power antenna housing structure was the same for all in the 51-4 years. Important feature is the brace is what keeps the antenna at true vertical so you would need to dimension, drill holes, and bend accordingly.

Here is a partial photo from the August 51 service counselor showing a front on view of the brace and with the instructions you can get a side view to figure the bend angles. Imagine the thickness is about 1/16 and with your sheetmetal and making the bead talent bet you will come up with something close.

Thank you! That is helpful, as it at least gives me enough to go by so between the little bits that are left and the pictures I'll be able to make a copy.

Even though it's underneath the car where nobody will ever see it, I like makings things as close to factory as possible.

Howard Thank you for the measurements on the mounting bracket. You and others on thos forum amaze me at what you know and how you have pictures to illustrate your answeres. You get an A+

Hate to ask... where on the car is the bracket mounted, the frame or fender? If I was patient, I realize it will become obvious once I have the antenna mounted on the fender and its hanging down where the lower bracket is needed.

Looks pretty clear on the drawing that it would be mounted to the lower lip of the fender. 🤔

It mounts on the lower fender flange.

I put a 55/56 antenna in my 54 as they were 12v. I had to make a lower brace as the 55/56 ones mount differently.

As was mentioned by PGH Ultra and Kev, on 51 and later cars the antenna brace is on the bottom fender edge but on my 47 it is bolted on a wide flange at the bottom edge of an an open extension of the body or cowl. When in position the bent portion of the brace makes the slotted end flat and the antenna base thru a couple of flat & rubber washers etc just sits on and is bolted to the brace.

I cannot say if your 48 will mount the same way as a 47 or as mentioned earlier, if the bracket is even the same shape because of the different and wider fenders but since the 48-50 under bodies are essentially the same as the 41-7 Clippers it might be a good first place to start looking. Since Joe, the original poster who started this thread, is working on a 50 model he might be the better person to ask. If he doesn't see the thread before it disappears again maybe a PM to him would get a definitive answer.

The red denotes where the brace is on a 47.
