A lot of stuff happened this weekend. I have my questions in bold.
I am working on getting the engine installed properly. I have the rear engine mount bolted in place, but the front ones are not aligned properly. They are too far forward. I believe it's possible to install the rear mount backwards, and there isn't anything in the manual that suggests the correct way. Has anyone else seen this? Do I need to reverse the rear mount to get stuff aligned? I am using the Ford radiator and the outlet does not quite align with the transmission cooler. Can this simply be fixed with some universal hose or do I need a formed hose? I am using a 56 Ultramatic in this car, and I realized that the 56 pan (dipstick tube) interferes with the exhaust on a 55. I will need to swap it to a 55. I noticed on my starter I don't have the two small terminals, just one. Normally there is one terminal from the ignition switch, and another terminal which powers the ballast resistor. I suppose I will need to connect the ballast resistor bypassing wire to the solenoid-to-motor circuit? I believe the starter is a Delco type but it's apparently off some other engine. I added accessory gauges into the glovebox. No "hacking" required or other BS as I have seen done on much more expensive cars. Oil pressure (Bourdon), voltmeter, and tachometer (digital, #7 wire). And yes the door still closes. 🙂 Attach file: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks. To me, the 60923 looks like too much of an offset. It's about 7" long with a 2¼" offset. (The straight piece in the photo is 6" long.) I think one of these might work: Dayco 72196 Continental 62279

The rear mount has an offset built into it. You will have to turn it 180 degrees. Also make certain the crossmember is bolted in with the notch on the driver's side.
55 or 56 pan and tube should line up regardless. Yours must be fwanged. Early dipstick tubes in 55s were longer, but still attached at the same tab. If only one small terminal on the starter--is the solenoid also small? 55 Deluxe and Supers used a starter with Bendix drive, not a shifted drive. Can't remember where the coil got power on those.

How does the distance "too far forward" compare to the asymmetry of the studs to holes in the rear mount? Quote:

If only one small terminal on the starter--is the solenoid also small? 55 Deluxe and Supers used a starter with Bendix drive, not a shifted drive. Can't remember where the coil got power on those. All HV coils were supplied running power thru the ballast resistor via a yellow wire coming straight from the IGN terminal on ign switch. Unlike some mfgs, Packard and Clipper had the starter solenoid do the job of providing a hot starting spark instead of having a special terminal on an ign switch or having no extra boost at all. Wiring diagrams show all Packard/Clipper models had the ballast resistor bypassed ONLY during cranking with the coil being supplied with 12v directly via a light green wire coming from the special 4th terminal on the starter solenoid. Senior models had the Delco pinion shift solenoid with 4 terminals, junior models with only the Bendix drive also had a 4 terminal solenoid but it was much smaller than the senior solenoid. If your engine has a 3 terminal solenoid from a Hash application or someone changed solenoids and didn't use the proper type, if you want to convert to the proper 4 terminal like Packard used, this Cole-Hersee replacement should work. Ebay vendors are probably the best bet for finding one but sometimes Napa or Amazon surprises. ![]()

Here is a photo of the transmission on the assembly stand. As we know, the 56 pan is different, having one less hole for the aluminum transmission. The dipstick part number is also different between years, but it turns out only the length is different (and is covered in STB 29 #3). The hole location was not moved. Therefore, the reason mine is different is it is a 1956-style Hash-style pan. So I'll swap it with a spare 1956 pan. The photo below shows the hole location. The Packard location is basically 90° "around the corner". The Hash type has a simple L shape dipstick tube instead of the "monkey hook" shape. The attachment to the flywheel cover mounting bolts is identical. Quote:
See photos. ![]() Oh. and I just now realized I forgot to put the washer plate on... easy fix. Quote:
That's what's odd, my recollection is that the starter on it is the one from the 55 Custom motor that was originally in the car. Unless I'm blind and I find the "missing" terminal, I'll just swap the starter. I have enough of them... I also wanted to ask if anyone else has problems with exhaust manifold bolts stripping out. I realized the right manifold on the engine had BOTH bolt holes stripped (manifold to exhaust pipe). Put a spare one on off the original engine, where I was able to remove both original bolts without damage, and still ended up stripping the through hole. Had to follow it up with a nut. Therefore making it the same as the left one, that was damaged in the same manner from the beginning... P.S. Anyone want to guess what year this tire is from? Just got it dismounted. Howard is correct, of course, but just a small semantics correction. The senior models had a solenoid starting, I believe, in 1954 while the junior and other earlier models had a relay. The difference is that a solenoid does external mechanical activation while a relay makes purely an electrical connection. I know that the starter device is usually called a solenoid but I also know that the term is frequently used incorrectly and I imagine the parts books didn't help!

Right. Delcos used a solenoid to positively engage the drive while at the same time making the electrical connection to the motor once the drive was fully engaged. The Auto Lite simply had a relay module; a Bendix drive provided engagement. Both drives include an overrunning clutch.
