I'd like to invite you to include your Packard in the Owner Registry here together with a pic, any known history and how you acquired it. Regarding the repro data plates ,I understand that they come up on eBay from time to time. And I also had some email correspondence with PACA & PAckardInfo member BarrySmith earlier this year on this subject. I tried to get Barry to post it directly on PackardInfo at the time and I'm sure he won't mind me including an edited version of it here. Barry's original email: "Attatched is an ID plate from Pulfer and Williams that I arranged whilst at Hershey. This fits 50's Packards, I am not sure exactly what years. The "old" one is from my 51. Interestingly, they apparently have never made this particular plate before. Anyhow, they made 50, I guess this means they have 49 in stock! They are priced at $25 ea. Pulfer and Williams have changed owners. Contact can now be made as follows LaVine Restorations/Pulfer and Williams 349 Beech Road Nappanee IN 46550 Telephone 574/773-7561 I guess you already know, they make just about every ID plate found on Packards. I also purchased plates for starter motor and generator. Perhaps you might like to post this on "THE FORUM" Barry" And my reply: "Barry, Perhaps you might like to post this on "THE FORUM" - Perhaps, BUT, it would be a whole lot better if you did . I don't want to steal your thunder with this......I say "go for it" and if there's a problem give me a call and we'll work through it together. Plus WHEN you post I'll jump in and put the hard word on you to put your Packards in the Owner Registry there. You have been warned! LOL" As you'll also see I "harass" people to include their Packards in the Owner Registry, including the guys I know personally, sometimes with positive results sometimes not.

When I see the triangles with a number in the middle it really makes me think that the number was applied later, and the triangles were part of the alignment for the number stamping. If not that, then why would then bother to stamp the triangles if there was no number???
Bizzare. Somewhere there must be a scrap of documentation that explains it. Not sure if that would be in Packard historical information, or later in the Briggs historical information. I am curious if there are any pictures of the "naked" bodies leaving either Packard's own body shop, or Briggs that show if the number was already stamped or not. Basically if the number was stamped before body assemble on the firewall panel, or at some point after body cab assembly.

Kev - the use of the triangles predates any involvement by Briggs by more than a decade, right back to when Packard began using thief-proof numbers in 1929. The exceptions are the first three years of the juniors. Some panels on these cars were stamped by Budd which have some bearing on this. I'll do a bit of speculating on the trianges in my upcoming article. The only known cars without triangles are some 1940 cars, and I suspect this may have had something to do with the transfer of body panel stamping equipment to Briggs for 1941 production.
