Question on 356" water pumps

In a load of V8s, there are two NOS rebuilt 356" water pumps. IIRC, the 356" only was offered 1940 - 1951, so both pre-war and post-war. Are all 356" water pumps the same? Do they fit any other displacements?

Thanks in advance.

The 40 356 has a different pump number and not sure what that one year difference might be unless it is the hub. 41-50 uses the same 362085 pump. The 356 was discontinued after 50 in passenger cars.

When I was ordering a pump for the 47 I bought a new repro from Kanter and at that time he was advertising new repros were available for several different year and model engines. I made a comment that it must have taken a substantial investment to have new repros made for so many engines. I was told that while all the basic pump bodies for those engines were the same, the difference was in the hub. There were two hub sizes and engines had different hub positions on the shaft, With only one body and two hubs being repro'd, many engines could be covered and when an order came in they just needed to press the correct hub the proper distance on the shaft to get it ready for shipping.

I don't know if there is anyone still at Kanters who might be able to provide the details on which other engines the pump body would fit but since yours already have hubs pressed on probably those two are limited to the 41-50 356.

After 51 50 when the radiator shape and size changed so did the pump body in order to lower the fan.

I'm assuming that was that shipment from the guy in Arizona? In my load of four 1956 transmissions, he decided to throw in these two parts.

Did you mean, after 1950? The 1951-1954 pump was totally different and even on those there were differences which were primarily based on the hub being different for cars with power steering than those without it.

Correct and so changed. Should have said for 51 and later.

They went to the shorter more square radiators in 51 which needed a different pump body with the shaft positioned a few inches lower down. Not sure how many hubs they had in those years but definitely more than 1.

Yep, lower and registered to the driver's side by '53 for sure. It was a challenge getting the in line 8 327 in my '37 to cool properly. What I did was install a newer 5 blade fan and truncate the blades to clear the left wall of the rad support and verify their balance. Been working good in stop and go traffic even in the 90+F degree weather we have had this summer!

The part where the fan goes is longer on cars with power steering to allow room for the pulley so you can use a power steering type on a non-power steering car but not the other way around. At the moment, there is really nothing other than the four bolts keeping the fan on my 1954 Patrician in place after I recently removed the flex-fan that it has had for decades, replacing with a stock A/C-type 12" fan. You can see the differences here in my blog but, of course, this has nothing to do with the original guestions.
