A few years ago I saw an article on a 1920s Packard Truck that was loaded with electronic gear, painted black, and called the 'Black Maria' (pronounced Ma-rye-ah).

To be honest, I am having a 'Senior Moment' and cannot recall if I saw the story in a Packard magazine, or in a Amateur Radio magazine.

Hopefully, a viewer out there will know about the Packard and point to a source of the article....

Of course to Black Maria was also called the 'PaddyWagon', I do not need to go into the details but think, 'drink' 'Irishman' 'fighting', you get the picture!

That Model T Ford reminded me there is at least one proper Paddy Wagon out there, a 1925-243 in Arthur Stone's museum in Florida. Sorry, no, I do not have a picture to post.

Isn't the correct spelling, "Patty Wagon"??

"The Patty Wagon was first used by the British when they would transport Irish prisoners in the wagons and they would refer to them as "patties", short for St Patricks. The term was very derrogative to them. The Wagon was particularly busy after July of 1822. Following Denmark Vesey's insurrection, free black sailors were not allowed to roam the streets of Charleston like they once did. They were transported from their ships to the Whipping House by Black Maria until their ships were ready to leave port."

I used to work for an old bricklayer (an Irishman) who referred to old broken and discarded bricks as "Irish confetti".

Tis said that when other nations have a holiday, a parade or a religious celebration they throw confetti. The Irish throw bricks.

I always thought it was funny.
