Tobs, I believe you are correct about the transmission drain plug being 1/2 NPT. This size is also used on the differentials, except maybe not for the Twelves and old style Eights. R-9 Overdrives use a 3/4 NPT drain plug and maybe the R-11 too.

I'm pretty certain my 1953 2665 3.90:1rear axle has 5/8-18 drain and fill plugs and not a 1/2 NPT. I saw both listed in the parts list. Perhaps a running change at some point?

-Talked with the 'Powerzentrum' guy today about a drain plug and had to eyplain what 5/8-18 meant, oh boy. Metric threads are specified with 1mm, 1,5mm pitch and not threads per inch, so it's a little confusing to deal with inches and unc/unf when you're used to that simple metric system.

I use the magnettes inside old computer harddrives. They are immensely powerfull. Just attach to bottom of drain plug on outside. They are so strong they will never fall off by themselves. Then when removing the drain plug the metal flakes will flush with the removal of the plug.

Yes even the NASA guys get confused, like when they lost the $125 million Mars orbiter.
