The service manual should also indicate a "motoring test" for the generator. If the generator will "motor" as per test (if) outined in the manual then u can be fairly confident that the field coils and armature are ok.
But IIRC the generator is gear driven at the timing case??? That could make the motoring test difficult to do.

Had another go at it today.
The thing about the potential damage to the field coils by fixing new replica ID plate got me thinking. First though I realised that mine is off a later, 9th series car - its an Owen Dyneto CL1005. However the principle seems to be the same. The second issue is that the regulator is a Bosch unit and it seems these were popular on 1950s Porsches and VWs. But heres the thing. The fixing screws for the regulator are long self-tappers and these have definitely mashed the coils!! There is no resistance through the coils so they have been grounded. Seems this is going to cost me. Time for a glass of wine I think............

Young friend has a '34 where the regulator was replaced by one from a VW and it was mounted on the firewall. And another thing, the car was negative ground(instead of positive ground). Don't know whether VW's are neg or pos ground, could that be a factor? My knowledge of things electrical is confined to being able to turn switches on/off!

Yes this is a crying shame. The car was clearly restored extremently well (the paint finish on the chassis is the same quality as the body!) but for the last 6 years it has been used as a wedding "hack". The mechanic that has "looked after it" during that time is a bit of a butcher to be honest and has shown no finesse in the running repairs. This is the job he did of fixing the regulator to the dynamo. Its obvious, now but I spent ages trying to understand why it was so dead. I'll update when I find someone to re-wind the field coils

Hi kts68,
Sorry to hear about your generator (dynamo) If you can't find anyone in Nottingham here is a good repairer who should be able to do it. Unfortunately he's in Essex and here is the address Broadway electrical services 36 The Broadway Grays Essex Rm 17 6Ew Tel No 01375 372 782 I had a starter motor rebuilt by them and the work was excellent and a resonable price. They have an old guy there who loves these sort of challenges. Good luck Terry

One potential source for new Owen Dyneto regulators:
atwaterkentmfg.com/voltage_regulators.htm A previous thread about this vendor being mentioned them as being unreliable,so caveat emptor.

"but for the last 6 years it has been used as a wedding "hack". "
IF that's the case then watch for any engine issues that mite be related to constant low speed operation and excessive idling such as the cooling system abnormalities.

Great advice, thanks. I would like to get it back to original spec if possible. However, if the unit has doubts over reliability, I might be better to settle for painting the cap of the Bosch unit (superlative quality!) in Packard Green. Its nice to know I can get an original looking replacement though.
