Battery Ground 47 super custom clipper

Not too shy to talk

I detailed my 356 8 clipper engine,,, but I can't remember where the ground (positive) wire connects to? Does it go on the bolt that holds the air funnel for the oil breather? I am having intermittent problem with the starter not working. The positive ( ground ) lead gets hot when I attempt to crank.

Also is the original ground wire a 0 gauge cable or a ground strap?

I believe the ground cable connects to the forward of the two generator mounting bracket bolts - not the swivels, but where the generator bracket is mounted to the block.

The cable getting hot most likely means either that it's an undersized cable (should be "0" gauge at least), or it has an inadequate ground connection.

Original ground wire was a heavy cable.

I am under the impression that the battery is grounded with a strap, not a cable. This would be a heavy duty strap. A 00 cable should work as well. I would use at least a 00 cable for the battery to starter connection. The bigger the better.

Correct, all straight 6 and straight engines used a strap to connect to the chassis/engine

Seems a difference of opinion. With the postwar strikes, maybe they used both.

There is a factory photo of a 22nd series herepackardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... ic.php?post_id=76451#forumpost76451 showing a cable and the attachment point. The 19-21st series Ignition Service Training Manualpackardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/IgnitionTrainingManual.pdf also shows a cable.

JW, I believe the use of the braided flat ground strap for postwar Packards began with the 51 models. I say this because the 1951 Salesman's Training Book clearly shows a flat braided strap, and the factory photos of the 22nd/23rd series show an insulated cable.

To add my opinion to what has been offered by O_D and others I am almost certain that the battery cables on my '47 Super Clipper with 54000 original miles on the odometer has the original battery cables and neither are the braided strap type.
