1938 1601 (Eight aka 120) fender welt and air cleaner bracket

Dear All,

We are getting very close to finishing up Laurie's car. A couple of questions have popped up:

1) Does the front fender welt extend along the entire fender, or just where the fender meets the body and front clip? It seems to me that it should be along the entire fender, with the portion along the engine bay acting as a seal/bumper for the hood.

2) Does anyone have any photos of the bracket that supports the air cleaner?

Thanks,

Tom

Bracket is about 7/8" wide, flat metal, has about20 degree bend at air cleaner end and 70 degree at head stud end. Ends are rounded a bit

Tom,

Here are some pic's of the bracket on a '39 120, ahould be the same or similar to '38. Also one of a '37 115C. The one on my '41 120 is the same or similar too.

EDIT I think the fender welt runs the length of the front fender. I'll try to remember to check Noel's '39 120, and take pic's, when I'm at the workshop tomorrow.

Mal,

Thanks tons for the photos. That is very helpful. I made a bracket yesterday, but the metal is far to thin compared to what you are showing.

I also will need to weld/braze a bit of thick metal to the air cleaner for the bolt.

Any photos of the welting will be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Thomas

Tom,
Is my face red or what?

One look this morning confirmed I had planted my foot directly in my mouth. Lead to a very bad aftertaste and difficulty in extracting said extremity. Being fat and inflexible doesn't stop those gymnastics from happening, but it sorely hampers extracting myself from those situations.

Fender welting only runs from bottom of the rear of the front fender to the firewall where the raised edge of the fender bolts to the inner fender panel. There is NO welting between the fender and inner fender panel.

Excuse the pic's, the finish on this car is good, it's just with using the flash up close it leaves lots of little flashes which look like paint imperfections

Ken,

Just as well I didn't comment on your request too, almost did, but restrained myself for once. I can say now the '37 is the same as the '39 described above.

Mal,

No need to beat yourself up. I greatly appreciate the effort in tracking down this detail

We have done a trial fit of some narrow welt between the inner and outer panels, and it will fit. We will take it out now that we know the correct approach.

Again, thanks tons.

Tom
