mounted the oil filter, still need to make the lines though.

also found a spare fuel filter bowl in my parts boxes and there was a spring in it. its was rusty, but i cleaned it up and it should work.

still looking for someone to let me borrow an enclosed trailer so i can take my car to Salado. we planned on staying the night on friday and i don't want to leave it out overnight on an open trailer, too risky. all i need is a 7x16 cargo trailer and if you don't have D rings in the floor i'll buy them and put them in and you can keep them for letting me use the trailer.

enjoy

Hank

Henry,

If you can see yourself in your PS pump reservoir, you have very few engine detailing problems to worry about.

just started putting on the many fittings on the motor, including the fuel filter bowl.

showed the parts of the check valve for the passenger's side of the motor, along with one of the others that i had. different size, but same function.

quick drain plug for the block antifreeze, driver's side. passenger's side was just a normal plug. don't know if that was factory but it was on there when i got the motor, so i put it back.

also to show the difference lighting does to the color. there are a couple of duplicate photos but the lighting was differnet. one shows what is more of the blueish and the other the wrong torquise color.

also will be rebuilding the vacuum advance soon, i have cloth reinforced neoprene ordered. was easy to pry up the retaining ring to get to the diaphragm. it is 2.5" in diamter with 1/4 hole in the middle. i will use a 1/4 bolt and nut to seal back together. if i am successful with that i will be glad to do others for my Packard friends.

enjoy

I just love your attention to details. Nicely done!

As regards the cylinder block drains, neither side had a petcock originally, though given how difficult it is to get at them, it's a nice improvement if you're not concerned with authenticity at that point.

A nice detail to add: On V-8s with the engine number up near the fill pipe, the number was highlighted in white. The actual practice, which was carried over from the straight eights was this: Before the block was painted, the number was stamped. Somebody then took a brush with white paint and brushed a stroke over top of the number. Before the engine was painted, a piece of masking tape was haphazardly placed over the number; after painting the tape was pulled away leaving the number in the middle of a white rectangle. You can do the same after the fact with a bit of masking and a dab of white. Looks nice, costs nothing, and is very authentic.

100% agree Ross. My original block had this. I scrapped away where the numbers were with steel wool when I first got it and it was a white/cream color, but the rest was the blue/green. The numbers on this new block are not in the same location as you speak and I didn't repaint that way as I don't want to draw attention to the numbers not matching . I will look for the pic I took of the white on my original block and post it.

Also thanks guys for the kind words, I'm trying to balance my anal ways with practicality as to not drive myself crazy over profection.

Hank

here are the pics of what Ross is talking about. also look at the blue/green on the block...sure looks similar to the paint that i used on the new motor if you ask me.

also i measured the diaphragm material, which is two pieces melded together and it is 1/32 total. the thinnest i could find in cloth inserted neoprene was 1/16.

If you are looking for thin diaphragm material, wonder if it would be worth a call to AntiqueAuto and see if they will sell a square of fuel pump diaphragm material or maybe has a fuel pump diaphragm roughly the right size you can buy and take apart to get the rubber. That should be pretty close to the proper thickness.
