It will be on the lower rear driver side of the block below the starter. Month/Day/Year all numerical.

Must be from a 1940 model with that build date. Is it actually "01 6 39" or "1 6 39". I am curious because the 356 block on my '47 is marked "8 26 47" with no prefix "0" for the month. Since the 356 wasn't offered until the 1940 models it also seems like a very early 356 if made in January 1939 so I wonder if the build date was 1 June 1939 in which case the date sequence was changed at some point between 1939 and 1947 from D/M/Y to M/D/Y.

That was the way I saw it even though it was upside down for me as I had to lean over from the passengers side to look. So all you say could be possible, the engine sits in a very awkward place so it is very difficult to get pictures of that side.

The number(C314883C) would indicate it is a 282 from a 120 model. The attached photo shows areas that will help identify the 356 engines. Hope this helps.

Isn't the oil breather tube on the early 120 engines on the rear of the block right behind the lifter covers, instead of on the lifter covers like the 356 and the later Packard straight eights?
Case in point, Mal's 120 engine, if you look closely at the very rear of the engine, you can see the hole in the block for the tube:

That would certainly explain the early '39 build date also. The 1940 356 engine numbers will be in the C500051-507697 in the Super Eight 160 models range or CC500000-503000 if in a 180 models according to Dr. Marvin.

Thanks guys:
That will certainly be information that I will be able to use in the future. I will at least be able to properly present the engine to prospective buyers. WD sorry this did not work out for you hope you find one. Thanks again. ALK
